From Mass Route 2 to Wilbur Clearing Shelter
Miles Hiked: 3
Hours Hiked: 2

I got up this morning at the Cozy Corner hotel in Williamstown, MA.  We called a cab to get to the post office so we could mail back the water pump to Glassman's friend.  In hiker world, every ounce counts- and you never want to carry something you can't use or eat.  After visiting the post office we stopped by a few stores to try to find a way to weatherproof the tent better.  Then, just because I was in town, and it is fun, I spent some time at the bookstore.  So much for caring about ounces- I bought two new books to carry along.

Finally, around 3 pm we found our way back to the trail.  After hiking less than an hour, we stopped to eat Chinese food left over from the night before.  And we read another chapter of "The Hobbit".  We happened to stop where three Chicken of the Wood mushroom groups were growing on a downed tree.  I have posted pictures of these orange and yellow mushrooms before, but I did not know they were edible.  Glassman has eaten them before, so we harvested one to add to our dinner tomorrow night.

Then we hiked another hour before stopping at the shelter, it was cold and dark and raining. Again.  We got to the shelter about twenty minutes after sunset and found a tent set up inside the shelter.
There was no space left to put even one sleeping bag.  We woke up the father and daughter inside and asked them to move the tent over.  We put out our sleeping bags, skipped dinner (but ate a few candy bars each), and read another chapter of "The Hobbit" before falling asleep.

Cool cemetery building we passed

A most delicious wild mushroom-Chicken of the Wood.  We harvested this one.

Can you find the blaze?

Me in the shelter, in the rain, with the tent of the father-daughter pair.
