MA Route 7 Sheffield to Hemlocks Shelter

Miles Hiked: 8.0
Hours HIked: 6

I woke up this morning in the storage hoop house near route 7 and was glad to see that, although it had rained all night, and although there was an abundance of fog, it wasn't raining this morning.  But it is very cold.  And then, the most beautiful trail magic was given to use- hot, fresh, real coffee.  The woman, Jackie, who lives next door, whose kids we met last night, came out this morning and offered us both coffee and granola.  And then she brought it out to us in real, ceramic mugs and plates.  Wow, it was a wonderful way to start the day.  So, of course, we read "The Hobbit" while enjoying this generousity.  There was even a bench in the storage hoop house on which we could sit!

We finally started hiking, but we were reluctant to leave such a friendly place.  We hiked only 3.6 miles when we crossed route 41 and decided to sit in the grass, have a snack, and read more "Hobbit".  We had just finished a chapter when Teddy Bear came hiking up the path!  So we took another few minutes so he could take a break, then we hiked together the rest of the day.  It was a lot of fun to hike with Teddy Bear.  When we three got to the shelter we built a big fire, made our dinners, roasted brats that Teddy Bear had packed in, and I read out loud the rest of "The Hobbit" for all three of us as we sat around the fire.  It was a wonderful day in hiking world today-filled with beautiful woods and views and hiking paths; generous, kind people, laughter, good conversation, and good weather.

This stone marks the site of a skirmish led by Daniel Shays. It says "Shays Rebellion was here Feb. 27, 1787".

View from the Trail-the three of us spent about two hours here just soaking in the view and chatting
